EV charging for state-funded education
High-value grants for schools, colleges, and nurseries
The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) for Education is a dedicated government route for state-funded institutions to invest in sustainable travel — with higher per-socket caps than the standard business grant in published materials. From 1 April 2026, new applications align to 75% funding up to a maximum of £2,000 per socket (confirm wording and any grandfathering on GOV.UK). Whether you are a single primary or a large multi-academy trust (MAT), ZOLB EV runs the survey-to-install path so your estates team can stay focused on the classroom.
We navigate technical capacity, safeguarding-aware layouts and OZEV-authorised delivery — always cross-check eligibility and caps on GOV.UK before you commit capital.
- £2k/socket from Apr 2026
- 40 sockets · 180-day voucher
- Closes 31 Mar 2027 (verify)
Not a state-funded school or college? Businesses, charities and most other organisations use the standard Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) — typically £350 / £500 per-socket bands in current public guidance, not the education route’s £2,000 headline from April 2026.

Who can apply?
This route is strictly for state-funded education providers. That typically includes:
- State-funded schools (primary, secondary, special schools)
- Further education colleges
- State-funded nurseries and pre-schools
- Academy trusts: you can often apply for up to 40 sockets per institution within the trust, rather than a single cap across the whole MAT — confirm the latest GOV.UK wording for trusts
Requirements (headlines — detail on GOV.UK):
- Off-street parking: designated parking clearly associated with your premises.
- Reference numbers: your URN (England/Wales), SEED number (Scotland), or institution reference (Northern Ireland) as GOV.UK describes.
- Future need: you must be able to declare a need for EV charging (staff, fleet, visitors, or encouraging future uptake — match your declaration to official definitions).
How ZOLB EV supports your estate
Installing EV chargers on a school campus is more than cabling — it is safeguarding, load management and evidence that stands up when OZEV and your trust review the pack.
1. Mandatory site survey
Government guidance expects a survey before you apply. We assess electrical capacity so you can size the number of sockets realistically and avoid surprise grid-upgrade costs where possible.
2. Safeguarding & design
We plan layouts that respect school boundaries and day-to-day safety. If you intend to open chargers to the public outside school hours, we align hardware and software with Public Charge Point Regulations 2023 expectations (payment, reliability and reporting) — confirm full obligations on GOV.UK.
3. Application readiness
We supply the technical specifications and authorised-installer details you need for the online application, so your estates team is not guessing at OZEV evidence fields.
4. Installation & claiming
Once your voucher is issued, we schedule work inside the 180-day window. We claim the grant through the scheme and deduct it from your invoice so you pay the net balance in line with official rules.
We do not replace GOV.UK: we are your commercial EV installation partner for delivery. Contact ZOLB EV when you want a campus-first plan.
Frequently asked questions
Can we charge the public for using the sockets?
Many schools offer charging outside core hours. If you do, you must comply with the Public Charge Point Regulations 2023 (payment methods, reliability and related rules). ZOLB EV engineers installs so operational choices line up with what those regulations expect — always confirm legal detail on GOV.UK.
What about independent schools?
Independent schools are generally not eligible for this specific route. Funding may still be available through the standard WCS for independent schools signpost (full detail on our main WCS page) or the EV infrastructure grant where you qualify — verify on GOV.UK.
Do we need a fleet of electric cars to apply?
No. You need to demonstrate a future need for EV charging — for example supporting staff switching to EVs, visitors and parents, or encouraging uptake over time — as framed in official guidance.
How do we handle multi-academy trusts?
MATs usually complete a separate application for each school within the trust so you can maximise the 40-socket allowance across the estate. Confirm the latest process on GOV.UK.

Secure your funding before March 2027
This scheme is publicised to close on 31 March 2027. With a 180-day installation window after voucher issue, estates teams should aim to complete surveys well ahead of the deadline.
